About

About me

Hello! My name is Catey Nelson. I'm a fourth-year student at Colorado State University, double majoring in Journalism/Media Communication and Psychology. Raised in Issaquah, Washington, I grew up surrounded by beautiful evergreens and foggy mountain ranges. My appreciation for nature was fostered in Issaquah, and was what later inspired me to buy my first camera at the age of 17. Ever since, my passion for photography and videography hasn't wavered. My dream is to create moving visual stories that are powerful, emotive, and cinematically engaging.

Through my time at my university, I've been fine-tuning my skills in multi-media communication and creation, focusing specifically on cinematography and storytelling. In my classes, my on-campus employment at Collegian TV and Student Video Productions, my freelance work with local bands, and in my video production company, White Room Productions LLC, I am continually learning and practicing my skills in creative videography and media production. After I graduate, I hope to start off my career by applying my skills to the field of documentary filmmaking, the entertainment and music broadcast industry, or the outdoor marketing industry,.

Visual Communication

For the past five years, I have been learning and implementing the art of storytelling into my work through a variety of different mediums. Throughout this site, you will see examples of how I demonstrate my understanding of visual communication through use Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects, as well as examples of my writing and design skills.

Leadership

I've had an incredibly valuable progression in my experience as a leader. As the Assistant Executive Producer for CTV, the captain for my high school soccer team and my club team for eight years, my position as the Client Relations Manager for SVP, and coaching students/staff how to direct live TV broadcasts, I've learned hands-on what it takes to be an effective leader. I prioritize the concepts of teamwork, compassion, direct and honest communication, and motivation. My degree in psychology as provided me with invaluable insight in navigating the dynamics of  difficult decision making, balance and navigate the complexities that come from working with others, and most importantly, how to organize the skills of individuals to accent each other and create both efficient teamwork and successful outcomes.

Adaptability

I have strengthened and refined this skill most significantly through my work at CTV, where I have had to adapt my schedule to fit the conflicts of our staff and to ensure we have enough content for our shows each night. I've had to guide our management team through crises that occur when we're on-air, as well as helped our reporters in their immediate navigation of breaking news events. As a reporter and producer myself, I've had to adapt to sudden deadline changes, story subjects bailing last minute, on-air script/schedule changes, and team-member dropouts. In the case of things going wrong, I've found that the only thing that keeps you and your team afloat is adapting to the changes.

Critical analysis

Throughout my time of studying both psychology and media communication, I have developed a deep understanding of the value of critical analysis and its application to composition. Throughout this site, you will see different pieces of my coursework that focus on utilizing my critical analysis skills, including my research analysis essay, my blog on media in the skiing culture, and more.
